At the Red Deer Kinsmen Club, one of our consistent goals is to showcase the amazing work of those in our own community. With a growing rate of assistance that is needed to help those affected by hunger, abuse, addiction and homelessness, it’s important that we have organizations that make these issues a priority. Loaves and Fishes was one of those organizations that stepped up and continued to change the lives of so many people over the years. From delivering nourishing food to those who need it most to providing safety from oppression and discrimination, Loaves and Fishes truly demonstrated what it meant to help others. After 20 years of service Loaves and Fishes Benevolent Society is closing its doors and we want to just say thank you for everything that they have done for the community.

As we say goodbye to the Loaves and Fishes, we wanted to showcase the amazing work that they have done in the community with their school lunch program. The Loaves and Fishes School Lunch Program (SLP), a fundraiser driven to help put fresh fruit into school lunches, met the need of 350 students every weekday morning and cost approximately $80,000 annually to run. Through many events ran alongside the SLP, they were able to raise the needed funds to ensure that every child in Red Deer had the opportunity to eat a healthy, nourishing lunch.

“It is our mandate and our belief that it is the responsibility of all to help the less fortunate. We are so passionate about what we de because very simply; people need help!”     Loaves and Fishes

Our commitment to supporting organizations like Loaves and Fishes plays a large role in who we are at the Red Deer Kinsmen Club and what it means to put your community first and it is with heavy hearts that we must say goodbye to them. With that said, we are pleased to say that the Mustard Seed is moving in to replace the work of the faith-based charity, beginning in September. Until then, Loaves and Fishes needs your help. If you or anyone you know would like to volunteer between the hours of 4:30 to 7:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday or Friday during the months of July and August, please contact: Susan or Ashton @ 403.347.1844. Your help will make sure that those who need it are being fed until the Mustard Seed begins its program in September. The Mustard Seed is a Christian charity has operated in both Edmonton and Calgary for over 30 years and has made a great impact for those living in poverty and homelessness. As one great door closes, another must open and we look forward to working with The Mustard Seed in the future.
