Without our sponsors, the Dream Home Lottery wouldn't be the same.

Although the sponsors we work with come from a variety of backgrounds and industries, there's one core reason why they've partnered with us time and time again: they see the value in improving the lives of Central Albertan through local initiative. They understand the difference that our events have on the community and have made and will continue to make. Whether it's through their hard work and materials, or a financial contribution, each sponsor is an important part of each of our events.

But do you know about these businesses besides their name and location? We're creating a new feature, the Kinsmen Supporter Spotlight. Each month, we'll be speaking with one Kin-affiliated sponsor to learn more about them and their relationship with the Kinsmen. This month, we're speaking with Ryan Philip from Red Deer Lighting. Besides contributing to our Dream Home Lottery, Ryan has been a member of the club for 8 years and has been involved with many of our events.

Tell us a bit about Red Deer Lighting.

Red Deer Lighting is a family owned business that was first started in 1987. I bought into the business from them 4 years ago. What some people might not know about our business is that we’re Central Alberta’s largest retail lighting showroom. We’re also the third largest buying co-op (behind Lowe’s and Home Depot), which means we can get better deals on the products we offer and pass those savings on to our customers.

How did you first hear about the Kinsmen? Why did you join the club?

My father became a Kinsmen in his late 30’s (he got so much out of it that he wishes he joined sooner). I want to do my part to help the community so I joined 8 years ago

How did Red Deer Lighting first get involved with the Kinsmen?

We’ve been sponsoring the Kinsmen long before I became a member. Red Deer Lighting has been working with the Kinsmen for over 20 years.

Besides the exposure for Red Deer Lighting, what have you gained from being involved with The Dream Home Lottery and the other Kin events?

Personally, the joy that I get from the club is seeing where the money goes. It’s crazy to think that about  20 volunteers from all walks of life can meet up for the common good of the community and make a noticeable difference. From the Red Deer Regional Hospital and Kinsmen Family Place to the Indoor Play Space in Blackfalds, we’ve been able to put the money received from these events into good use for people to benefit from.

As a business owner and a Kinsmen, why do you think it’s important to support groups like these in the community?

If it wasn’t for the Kinsmen, many of the charities and nonprofits in Red Deer and Central Alberta wouldn’t be able to function. Two groups that immediately come to mind are The Red Deer Food Bank and Camp Alexo. The Food Bank has seen the demand for their services go way up recently, and with Camp Alexo, we want to ensure that kids can attend their programs and make lifelong relationships

Does Red Deer Lighting sponsor/get involved with any other groups or events in Red Deer?

In the past, we’ve contributed to the STARS Home Lottery and The Hospitals’ Home Lottery, but we’ve also helped out the Red Deer Food Bank and the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Lighting is an artform that is constantly changing and looks and styles are always coming and going. One of the easiest ways to improve any room in your home is to swap your current lighting setup for a newer one. If you’ve been thinking about improving your light fixtures but you’re not sure how to get started, stop by Red Deer Lighting. Our team is more than willing to answer any questions you may have.

In the past 4 years, we’ve also started a full service electrical firm. From new home construction projects to wiring and installation, we’re confident that we’ll be able to take care of your electrical needs. By having the retail showroom and a team of electricians, we’re the perfect package.
