As an organization that is deeply embedded with the Red Deer community, we support other organizations that are dedicated to making Red Deer a better place to work, live, and raise a family. In this blog series, we’ll be highlighting some of those organizations, our relationship with them, their funding, and some of the initiatives these great organizations carry out to make our city the place it is.

The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery, which boasts a collection of more than 90,000 objects, has been serving the Red Deer community for more than 40 years. They are a permanent institution that serves the public of Red Deer by acquiring, conserving, researching, communicating, and exhibiting for the purpose of study, education, and enjoyment. Their collections have been generously donated by more than 3,000 individuals from Red Deer and the surrounding areas. Their primary collection is a set of over 15,000 pieces of clothing and textiles, but they also have military history, decorative arts, the history of commerce and agriculture, visual arts from Central Alberta, and contemporary First Nations artists.

Red deer museum kinsmen club

This is the second year in a row that we’ve had the honour of supporting the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery in their local activities. Last year, our funding helped the acquire new software, which helped them manage their membership and donor programs. This year, we’re sponsoring miniMag, a hands-on art, and activity program for toddlers and caregivers.

The miniMag program is a chance for our local young (under 5) artists to come and create a weekly piece of art. It’s a great opportunity to spark a creative outlet in our next generation, help them with their fine motor skills, improve their communication levels, and create an atmosphere where they learn through play. The drop-in program runs every Wednesday morning at 9:30-11am.

For more information, you can watch their TV spot that they did on Shaw TV this past Spring. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMXwUneTsUE

Red deer museum kinsmen club dream home

The Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery, with a vision statement "to inspire passion for history and art in our community,"

truly represents the values that we at Red Deer Kinsmen believe are important to creating a positive community atmosphere here in Red Deer. Some of their community initiatives include:

  • MAG Sparks, an art program for adults with developmental disabilities.
  • Building partnerships with Native Friendship Centre, Central Alberta Refugee Effort, the Alzheimer’s Society, and the Central Alberta Historical Society.
  • Making their 100,000+ artifacts available to the community.
  • Opening up their spaces to local, central Albertan artists.
  • Implementing free admission last year.
  • Opening up their space for Not-for-profit organizations to use as meeting spaces.
  • Bringing the museum activities to other local events and organizations.
  • Using local service organizations to support their events.
  • Recently opening their doors to the Sisters in Spirit march, a march to honour the missing and murdered Aboriginal women.
  • Their employees serve on a number of non-for-profit organization’s boards.
  • Last year, their staff took the initiative to collect hats, mitts and funds for Safe Habour Society and collecting small gifts, toiletries and baby items for the Women’s Emergency Shelter.

As you can see, the importance of community is a goal that we share with the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery. To them, being actively engaged in the community means they always have an “ear to the ground.” They are always open to what their community members are expressing, while being generous with their facility, their staff’s time, and the material goods that they are supplied with.

It’s been a pleasure to offer our support to a community pillar like the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery, who does so much for our growing community.
