This is a huge year for our country.
Canada’s 150th birthday is fast approaching, and we know that you’re most likely thinking about how you’re going to celebrate the big day. Luckily, we’ve rounded up a few great activities for you and the whole family to participate in just a short drive away from Red Deer.
Take your pick!
Check Out The Capital City
If you’re looking to do something fun during the day, Edmonton is just a short drive from Red Deer - just shy of two hours - and what better way to kick off a Canadian Celebration than by visiting our capital city?
Edmonton comes alive in the summer with food trucks and various events, so if you’re thinking of making the trip you’ve made a good decision.
Check out the Legislature Grounds or Churchill Square (complete with one of the Canada 150 signs) to snag some scenic photos and to enjoy the day with family and friends. The River Valley, right below the Legislature Grounds, is another hotspot where you can expect to find amazing views that will have you saying Oh, Canada!

Traditional dancers and musicians will also be present for this all-day party.
At night the square comes alive with a fireworks’ show. You won’t want to miss this jam packed Canada Day special!

Join The Festivities At Fort Calgary
Calgary is hosting an all-day Canada Day event at Fort Calgary, and the schedule is jam packed with activities for all age groups. There will be a petting zoo, food trucks and a Bow Water paddling race with live music on the Calgary Folk Fest Stage all day long.
The best part? A Living Flag will take place in the morning. ENMAX will be giving away 1500 T-shirts to help you be part of a massive Canadian flag! Now, during what other occasion are you going to be able to say you participated in something like this?
Calgary is only an hour and a half away from Red Deer, so this is something you can make a day trip out of. Come out in your best red and white to help have an unforgettable time.
Make a Splash At Sylvan Lake
Only 30 minutes away from Red Deer, you’ll find Sylvan Lake, a popular location for many to kick back and relax in the Canadian sun.
Get ready for a day filled with events if you choose this as your destination for all things Canada 150. The whole town is going to be joining in with a huge birthday cake, a march of Canadians, a fire show, and musical fireworks to end off the night right.
Oh, and being able to hang out on the beach all day isn’t too bad either.
Break out the volleyballs and sand castle building equipment! Sylvan Lake Provincial Park also offers you the chance to get into the Canadian outdoors with opportunities for scenic hikes and family fun.

Celebrate Locally With Yours Truly
Of course, some of the very best celebrations will take place right here in Red Deer.
Bower Ponds will be hosting an epic Canada Day celebration with entertainment on an outdoor stage going all day long, an international food court offering amazing ethnic foods and even a children’s festival. The day will end with none other than a fireworks show.
Venture Into Banff National Park
If you’re feeling really adventurous this Canada Day, we challenge you to drive a little more than 2 hours out of Red Deer for some Canada Day fun.
Banff National Park is filled with a multitude of breathtaking hikes, and all national parks are FREE to enter this year with a government issued Park Pass in honour of Canada’s 150th birthday! This is your chance to check out the Rocky Mountains and truly immerse yourself in Canada’s amazing outdoor scene. An added bonus? Canmore is only a 15 minute drive from Banff, and this great location offers even more hikes and outdoor adventure like white water rafting!
Whatever you choose to do, The Red Deer Kinsmen Club would like to wish you and your family a very happy Canada Day!
