Regardless of where you work or what you do, everyone can benefit from meeting new people.

Whether you’re looking for a new line of work or want to meet others in your industry, a reliable network can produce many positives for you and your business. A strong group of peers can lead you to new opportunities (more customers or even a valuable business partner) and can help you reach the next level in your career.

While growing your network might seem hard, these tips are sure to steer you in the right direction. Follow these three pointers and you’ll get the most out of every event you attend.

#1: It’s a Long-Term Game

Understand that building a network takes a long time. That being said, you should start as soon as possible. If there isn’t a networking event coming in the near future, take the initiative to call a few people and host your own meeting. It doesn’t have to be a “suit and tie” type event; networking events can take place at a dinner party, during a volunteering event, or even over a round of golf.

If speaking with people you’ve never met before sounds intimidating, tell the person you wish to invite that “you’d like to introduce them to some fellow business owners or people in the community in order to help them with their business.” You can even ask one of your friends to bring someone along that might want to meet new people in the community!

#2: Try to Help Everyone

When you go to these meetings, find out how you make help the other person. What business problems are they facing? Do you know how you can help them? Maybe you know a tool that they should be using or know someone who solves that same problem or a living. Being that problem solver not only strengthens your relationship with them and improves trust,  but it also gives you and the other person peace of mind!

#3 Listen more than you speak

Dale Carnegie, author of the bestselling classic How to Win Friends and Influence People, said it best:

“Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves. Talk in terms of the other man's interest. Make people feel important, and do it sincerely.”

Make sure the conversation isn't one-sided and make it your mission to learn as much as you can about the other person. This way, you can discover what their biggest issues are and how you can help.
