Increase in Membership Announced at Kin Canada AGM

(Red Deer, Sept 3/10)—Kin Canada announced an increase in its national membership for the first time in 31 years at the Annual General Meeting of the Association in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Aug. 25-28. As of June 30, the total national membership was 7,273. Over 500 clubs, including the Kinsmen Club of Red Deer, belong to Kin Canada, an all-Canadian service organization.

“The increase in membership to KIN Canada is a reflection of how Canadians help each other out and serve their communities in these economic times,” said Myles Peake, president of the Red Deer Kinsmen Club. “Everyone wants to help their community out in some way and by volunteering for a service club is a great way of doing it.”

Other convention highlights included the launching of the Portraits of Honour mural as a national service project. The mural, painted by artist Dave Sopha, honours the Canadian soldiers who have fallen in combat during the war in Afghanistan. The Portraits of Honour mural will go on tour across Canada beginning in June 2011.

“KIN Canada has been involved with supporting the Canadian Military for 90 years,” said Myles Peake, president of the Red Deer Kinsmen Club. “From the national project Portraits of Honor to World War 2 campaign, Milk for Britain, KIN Canada has been behind our armed forces.”

Convention delegates attended breakout sessions, elected officers and helped set the future direction for Kin Canada. They also heard a keynote address by Terry Kelly, a blind musician who has won seven East Coast Music Awards and been nominated for a JUNO.

Kin members make a difference in their community through service projects such as the recent donation to the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation of $340,000 for the upgrades of the pediatric ward. Proceeds from past fundraising events have supported the Red Deer Food bank, Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter, Red Deer College, and the Youth and Volunteer Center to name a few . The club is currently gearing up for the 2010 Dream Home Lottery which is set to launch for the end of October.

The Red Deer Kinsmen Club has 27 members and meets at 6:30 on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month at the Kinsmen Hall, 4726 -34th Street. Kinsmen and Kinette clubs are men and women dedicated to “serving the community’s greatest need” by promoting service, fellowship, positive values and national pride. RED DEER KINSMEN MAKES A $20'000 DONATION TO THE PENHOLD REGIONAL MULTIPLEX!

RED DEER KINSMEN MAKES A RECORD BREAKING $340'000 DONATION TO THE THE LOVE OF CHILDREN GOLF CLASSIC!-

  • The pediatrics ward at the Red Deer Regional Hospital will be getting some major upgrades after the Red Deer Kinsmen shelled out a record breaking donation today. The Kinsmen donated 340-thousand dollars to the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation's Love of Children Golf Classic - its the largest donation in the clubs 74 year history. On top of the donation, Foundation Co-Chair Joan Donald says the golf event starting Sunday is a sell-out once again meaning more benefits for the pediatrics ward at the Red Deer Regional Hospital. JUNE 10, 2010

Below is a speech by Darcy Mykytyshyn announcing the donation:

Good Morning Everyone

Thank you to the Hospital Foundation, Golf Classic Committee and a special thanks to Ray McBeth for making today possible.

It’s a real treat to be standing here this morning, with my colleagues from the Red Deer Kinsmen Club to announce the largest single donation our club has made back to the community in 73 years.

Our club is part of a national organization that contributes millions of dollars to Canadian communities each year, made up of guys ranging in age from 18 to 40.

In fact, Kin members have proudly contributed more than $1 billion to Canadian communities since our Association was founded in 1920 by Hal Rogers who was 21 and, after returning from the trenches of the First World War, missed the camaraderie of the men he had served with.

Looking to join a club, Rogers decided to join a service club (who will go unnamed), but his application was rejected because it was their policy not to admit two members from the same business establishment (his father, with whom Rogers worked, was already a member). As a result of this rejection, Rogers and a small group of men gathered for a dinner meeting and became the first Kinsmen club, the Kinsmen Club of Hamilton.

Our membership has included such notable Canadian leaders as Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn.

The Red Deer Kinsmen continues this spirit and has a proud and rich history of being a leader within the Kinsmen movement for many decades.

We have been “Serving the Communities Greatest Needs” since 1937, with a strong history of building playgrounds, parks and recreational facilities.  It’s hard to miss the contributions of Kinsmen members that have come before us in such great projects as

  • Kin Canyon
  • Kinsmen Community Arenas
  • Kinsmen Library Link
  • Bower Kinsmen Community Hall
  • South Hill Community Centre

In addition to the projects that carry our name, there are dozens of other initiatives that we have proudly supported in the past, and some of which we continue to support today; for example:

  • The Red Deer Kinsmen were the founding partners in the Youth and Volunteer Centre
  • The Red Deer Kinsmen is a long-time funder of the Milk for Kids program at the Red Deer Food Bank
  • Our last major project was to the Red Deer Soccer Centre in 1997 with support of $200,000 to build their facility.
  • For the past 4 years, we have been running a program during our annual Dream Home Campaign where $10 from the sale of each ticket sold is allocated to a different community grouped each weekend to support their efforts in making Red Deer a great place to be.  During that time CLOSE TO $450,000 has been contributed to organizations such as
  1. Cystic Fibrosis
  2. Red Deer Legion
  3. Red Deer Pond Hockey
  4. Red Deer College
  5. Youth and Volunteer Centre
  6. Habitat for Humanity
  7. Canadian Red Cross
  8. Red Deer Hospice
  9. Exalta Gymnastics
  10. Central AB Women’s Shelter
  11. Breast Cancer Research
  12. AND THERE ARE MANY MANY MORE….

As you can probably tell from the examples I have listed, Kids have a special place in the heart of our Kinsmen and Kinette clubs in Central Alberta.  The Red Deer Regional Hospital is no stranger to Kinsmen Kare.

Over the years our club has been part Streetscapes project in the Paediatrics Ward, and so today is a special day for us to be standing here and re-inforcing our continued commitment to this critical facility.

Today’s support for the Love of Children Golf Classic and Pediatrics at the Red Deer Regional Hospital is one more example of our desire to ensure for the well being of the most vulnerable members of society, our children.

We are very proud to be partnering with the Love of Children.  Joan and Brian, you, your committee and all the dedicated staff at the Health Foundation have built this event into one of the premier golf events in Central Alberta, and so it is with excitement that we have the opportunity of making this an event stronger event for Central Alberta’s children over the next 3 years.

The beauty of this partnership is that it is about working together to support a common cause and ensuring that the “the kids” are getting the most support and attention possible.

In today’s very busy world, where everyone is juggling multiple priorities on the job and working to make their families strong, the members of the Red Deer Kinsmen club will be there to support you, and those other community organizations that truly make a difference in making Central Alberta one of the greatest places to live.

It takes many things for something like today to come together, so I would like to spend a moment acknowledging a few of those groups today.  The dollars to fund this project come directly from our Dream Home project, which would not be possible without:

  • the support of the business community who play such an important role in making our Dream Home project such a great success.
  • Our ticket purchasers
  • My colleagues from the Red Deer Kinsmen (please stand).  It is impossible to describe the effort and dedication required to make the Dream Home the success it is.  These guys are all leaders in our community and there is no doubt you will continue to see them again helping “Serve the Communities Greatest Needs”.  For us in Kinsmen, these will be the proudest days of our Kinsmen careers because they are the culmination of everything we work towards during the course of the year.

With that, I would like to call Current Kinsmen President Len Sisco and Incoming President Myles Peake to present the Love of Children Golf Classic with a cheque for $340,000.
