Happy December everyone! The Dream Home Lottery is just over three weeks away from being complete and we can't wait to announce all of the winners! These past few months have been busy for everyone, but we want to say thank you to this year's home builder, Larkaun Homes, and all of the companies and tradesmen who donated their time and resources into making this home a success (to see a list of this year's sponsors, visit this link). We also want to say thanks to everyone who has bought a ticket this year; you continued support to our annual event makes us proud to be Kinsmen. If you have yet to see the Dream Home, we're confident that these pictures will make you want to visit the home!

Christmas came early this year in Red Deer! What better way to celebrate 2015 and the upcoming holidays than with your friends and family? Volunteering is one of the most important parts about our club and we're always looking for ways that we can give back to our community. From helping the Red Deer Food Bank by packing, stacking and sorting boxes to contributing to the Red Deer Action Group Society, we're working to make Red Deer better one project at a time!

Over the years, the Kinsmen have gained a reputation for providing assistance to Red Deer and the surrounding community as well as being a great opportunity for men to socialize and make lifelong friendships.

But who make up the Kinsmen? What are they like on a personal level? To answer these questions, we've created a new series called Member of the Month. Each month, we'll speak with one of the Kin to learn more about them and to highlight their accomplishments in relation to the Kinsmen's efforts.

This month, we're speaking with Nabil Abu-ulba, this year's Club President. During his time with the club, he's experienced many memorable moments and has shared us some of those stories today.

With Christmas right around the corner, food banks are about to experience an increase of people that require assistance. Alberta has always been known as a province with abundant resources, but because of the recent economic developments, more people are beginning to rely on food banks and similar support groups in order to supplement their needs. We need to work together to ensure that no one will have to worry about how they'll feed themselves and their families; one way that the Kinsmen have been able to help is by volunteering at the Red Deer Food Bank. We've spoken about how important they are to Red Deer before, but we recently visited their facility to give them a hand.

As a club that is built on the motto of "serving the communities greatest need," part of the Kinsmen's duty is to assist each and every person in Red Deer and the surrounding area. We do this through volunteering and financial contributions and we've been able to meet and make friends with people from all kinds of backgrounds. One of those groups we've been able to help out is the Red Deer Action Group Society. We've been a longtime supporter and we're proud to be recognized as a major contributor.

Last month, we told you a bit about the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery and how their services are an important part of Red Deer and Central Alberta's history (if you missed that post, read it here before proceeding). Besides organizing a multitude of programs and events, the nonprofit has been able to showcase the talents of many artists and creatives. In order to help the Museum + Art Gallery gain a better insight into their members, the Kinsmen donated the funds required to purchase SUMAC, a new program that helps nonprofits with their duties.

Now that the Museum + Art Gallery has been able to use the new software, we thought we'd follow up with them to see how SUMAC is making their job easier and ask them about their current exhibits.

To start things off, we've spoken to Leonard Sisco. As a longtime member of the Kinsmen and this year's Dream Home Chair, we wanted to ask him a few questions including how he became a member and his favourite parts about the club.

If there's one thing we love seeing in Red Deer and the surrounding area, it's kids playing sports.

Many members of the Kinsmen have fond memories of playing sports from a young age. In fact, it's so important that we've been known to get together throughout the week and get together for a few games.  It's helped us with almost every part of our own lives. Because of this, we want to make sure today's kids have the same opportunity to have fun that we had when we were their age.

Besides having fun, sports have many applications that impact people later on in life.Today, we wanted to highlight the efforts of two organizations we've supported in the past: Red Deer Pond Hockey and the Red Deer City Soccer Association. Because of their initiatives, these organizations are helping today's youth in ways that impact their lives that go beyond the ice/field.

As a service club, the Kinsmen exist to improve the lives of Canadians and their communities throughout the country. Our own chapter has had a long history of helping people in Red Deer and has gotten attention thanks to events like the Dream Home Lottery, but one aspect of our organization that some people might not be aware of is the Kinsmen Community Grant. Thanks to this fund, we have the opportunity to contribute and follow our motto of "serving the community's greatest need."
